Dumortierite is an aluminium borosilicate mineral that can occur in prismatic crystals. When Dumortierite forms as included crystals in massive quartz it is known as Dumortierite Quartz. The color ranges from light and deeper blues to violet. Almost all Dumortierite is opaque, but there are some rarer ones that appear almost translucent. The stone commonly has a waxy and dull luster. Pure Dumortierite gemstones are rarely encountered. Most lapidary-grade Dumortierite is dense blue inclusions of Dumortierite within Quartz. Dumortierite sources include Brazil, Peru, Madagascar, Namibia, Austria, and the U.S.
